Student journos challenge press policy 

"When journalists in Massachusetts set out to cover an event, getting the story straight is their top concern, getting arrested is not often among their worries," writes Sean McLaughlin for the BC Heights.

"Official press passes issued by the Massachusetts State Police protect journalists from an unwarranted arrest when covering events such as riots and protests. This protection does not extend to college journalists working for student newspapers, according to the official policy of the Massachusetts State Police. Student editors at The Heights learned of these retrictions last week after officials denied their requests for press credentials..."

Animosity is understandable. The paper did, after all, let slip a flagrant affront to the entire school community.

But the punishment may have exceeded the crime.

The sting of this specific comment will eventually wear away, and all that remains will be the deeper societal struggles it highlights - and that's something that goes far beyond one sports column.
