Globe: State matching grant boosts UMass research 

When the University of Massachusetts at Amherst last week announced a $40 million research project to build a revolutionary weather radar system, the $5 million pitched in by the state was hardly noticed, dwarfed by the record-setting $17 million federal grant that anchored the project.

But that state money, promised by Governor Mitt Romney last spring, marks the first time Massachusetts government has offered a match for federally funded academic research, according to university and business leaders who brokered the partnership...
